DakhaBrakha

DakhaBrakha is a music quartet from KyivUkraine. Their “ethno chaos” sound spans years of performances prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion, but war is in everything now. They masterfully blend Ukrainian traditional music with influences from around the world, resulting in an unexpected new music.

Traditional music has seen a resurgence in Ukraine over the past decades, after being suppressed during Soviet rule. DakhaBrakha uses Ukrainian polyphony as its foundation, interweaving complex rhythmic and melodic structures from India, Arabia, Africa, and Australia. Their music is textural, layered sounds with distinctive percussive heartbeats, thumping bass lines, distorted electric guitars and influences of jazz, spoken word, rap and even punk. DakhaBrakha calls this tapestry of influences “ethno chaos.” And this chaos is a strength, allowing them to draw in strands of music that connect Ukraine with the world.

They are troubadours, activists and educators. Though their name means Give/Take in the old language, DakhaBrakha is new Ukraine, both pre-colonial and post-Soviet, working within a global network of art and music. They aim to help audiences see Ukraine not as a monolith, but as a cosmopolitan culture that takes in other cultures, and gives in return.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element. Projected behind them are a mix of animations from different Ukrainian artists and photos of life in today’s Ukraine. Some are celebratory, bright and bold. Some are dark, others curious, a reflection of the many facets of Ukrainian culture.

In March 2011 DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and began their ascent in the international music scene. They have since played hundreds of concerts and performances at major international festivals including Big Ears Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, WOMAD, Roskilde Festival and on the main stage at the Glastonbury Festival. In March 2020, DakhaBrakha won the Shevchenko National Prize for Musical Arts – the biggest award in Ukraine in the sphere of contemporary art – and confirmed its place in the culture once again. In 2023 DakhaBrakha won globalFEST’s Artist Award in the USA and became Chevaliers of the Order of Arts in France.

The band is currently in the process of recording their first album since 2020 in Kyiv (Ukraine),  which combines material created before and during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Anna, a twelve-year-old Ukrainian gymnast, has fled her war-torn country and recently settled in Montreal with her mother, younger brother, and grandmother. Confronted by the past, the challenges of exile, and a deep need for belonging, she seeks to rebuild her identity and regain her balance. Ukrainian Singing Workshop with Nadia Tarnawsky

Ukrainian Singing Workshop with Nadia Tarnawsky

A rare opportunity for Louisville and broader Front Range community members to experience the unique and relatively little-known traditional music of Ukraine. This 2.5-hour, Sunday afternoon public workshop will be led by Nadia Tarnawsky, a Cleveland-based singer, ethnomusicologist and Ukrainian song specialist who will be appearing in concert with Planina in Louisville the night before.  Planina is hosting the workshop. Both events are made possible by an Arts Grant from the City of Louisville, CO.

The singing workshop is open to: Singers of all genders, backgrounds, and levels of experience — ages 10 and up. All songs will be taught in the oral tradition. Ability to read Ukrainian or musical notation is not required. Some of the time in the workshop will be spent on the vocal technique used to create the folk singing style.

Approach: The workshop will aim to teach one to two Ukrainian songs in choral style (that is, with multiple voice parts). This will be a supportive and low-stakes environment in which community members can try out vocal styles that are very different from Western artistic style. Learning to unleash one’s voice to make new kinds of sounds, and singing together in new harmonies, can be a profound experience that builds the confidence of young and old, practiced musicians and novices alike.

Tickets:

Adults $30 in advance, $40 at the door

Students 10-18 $20

Questions: Email info@planina.org.

Oi, Tam Na Hori (Oh, Yonder on the Mountain)

Planina in Concert with Guest Singer Nadia Tarnawsky

Songs of heartbreak . . . of humor . . . of winter and spring traditions . . . Planina presents a concert highlighting songs from Ukraine — ethnically Ukrainian songs as well as songs from minority populations in Ukraine — plus some of our favorites from other countries in Eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Poland, Serbia). The group is joined for this concert by Cleveland-based singer, ethnomusicologist and Ukrainian song specialist Nadia Tarnawsky.

We are excited to bring this concert to Louisville.  Along with a public workshop on Ukrainian folk songs presented by Nadia Tarnawsky the following day, it is part of a project made possible by an Arts Grant from the City of Louisville.

Planina, a Colorado-based, 17-member mixed chorus of singers and instrumentalists, has been bringing traditional music from Eastern Europe to Colorado audiences since 1988. The group has made study trips to Bulgaria and Georgia, has recorded three CDs, and performs at local schools and senior living facilities as well as in concert and at festivals. Learn more at planina.org. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Planina has worked to increase its Ukrainian repertoire, provide welcome to Colorado’s Ukrainian refugee community, and support humanitarian aid to Ukraine. A portion of the proceeds from this concert will benefit the Boulder-based nonprofit Sunflower Seeds Ukraine.

Nadia Tarnawsky has been studying and performing Ukrainian music since childhood and has performed with and led workshops for some of the United States’ premier interpreters of Eastern European music. She holds a master’s degree in ethnomusicology and has traveled to Ukraine many times, including on a Fulbright grant in 2017-2018 to study and collect recordings of traditional songs.  Learn more at nadiatarnawsky.com.

Four Years of Resistance – Stand With Ukraine Rally

  • Colorado State Capitol Steps 200 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

On Sunday, February 22, we gather at the Colorado State Capitol Steps to mark four years since russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Four years that have demanded endurance, courage, and an unrelenting will to survive.

This winter, Ukraine is facing freezing temperatures and widespread power outages across major cities. Cold, darkness, and war are converging, and Ukrainians are paying the price. This reality is why continued visibility, solidarity, and public support matter.

The rally will feature speakers from Congress, leaders from our Ukrainian community, and allied advocates. Together, we will honor those who have fallen and stand with those who continue to fight for Ukraine’s freedom.

All are welcome. This war has not stopped, and Ukraine cannot be pushed out of focus.

Please bring flags and signs and stand with us.

Ukraine is still standing, and together, so are we.
